Buddha's Sutra on the Essence of Life # The Bodhisattvas in the Buddha's Paradise had a Bhikshu come to them and asked: "Bhikshus, why do you seek the essence of life?" "We seek to know," they replied. "Well," said he, and opening a secret door in his body, he showed them within himself an image of an infant newly born so delicate that it could not be seen by any eye. The infant was surrounded by divine luster equal to that of the sun and moon. No one knew who it was nor whence it came; all wondered at such a strange sight. The Bodhisattvas looked with wonder and said: "How sweet and pure it is! What is its name? Where did it come from? How does it live?" They wanted to approach and admire the infant, but as they came near, they found that he was asprawl under their feet. Then they became alarmed and exclaimed: "Alas! How dangerous is this place! We should not enter." And yet they remained there, looking at the great marvels of the infant. The Bodhisattvas thought to themselves: These are lands of perfect bliss. They are divine lands of joy, delighting in pure bliss. The ruler of this land has two forms, male and female. The lands are pure like crystal; they are lands of quietude and comfort. How does this infant live here? He is the only child; he lives alone. He is clothed with divine luster; he is surrounded by it as if by a garment. We should ask the child, but we cannot approach him." The Bhikshu looked upon them and said: "You have come from afar to contemplate the essence of life, and yet you do not understand what you see before your eyes! You can see my body as plainly as you saw that infant lying under your feet a little while ago. But I am living now, though my body contains an infinite number of myriads of beings. The Bodhisattvas heard that which they asked, and were astonished. They exclaimed humbly: "How wonderful! How wonderful! What is the essence of life?" "This blessed figure," said he, "is the essence of life. It is the sixth thing there be in this universe, and it is not something separate from them, but it hath its sixfold nature within them. Why? Because there are six aspects to all things. There are six vital forces in all things." Again they asked him what were these vital forces. He replied: "There are five vital energies in man. These are the wind, breath, body warmth or vitality; mental activity; perception; and consciousness. All these six are one essence, and they become six in man." The Bodhisattvas rejoiced at the words of the Bhikshu, and asked him how it was that he was so perfect. He said: "My pure energy is always full—always full of life. All the other energies on which you rely have a decline from infancy to old age. But my pure energy never declines—is ever fresh and vigorous! In me, who have no diseases or defilements, there is neither sickness nor death." Again they asked him what were these six vital forces.
